Eagles and bison and grizzlies....oh my!!

What a fabulous day!! We decided that despite the crappy weather (50 degrees and cloudy), we'd don our leathers, hop on the bike and head to the park to see Old Faithful and the rest of the lower loop. You only live once, right??

Well, we couldn't have had a more exciting day! Only a few miles into the park, we saw an eagle's nest and Chuck spotted the bald eagle in a tree.

Then, we went a few more miles down the road, and a grizzly bear came down the hill only about 25 yards from us and walked across the road. We were so excited, but kind of scared at the same time since we were on the motorcycle and really had no protection if Mr. Grizzly decided that he didn't like us.

We continued on to what they call the Fountain Pots. Almost the whole lower loop area of the park is geo-thermal and everywhere you look there's steam coming up out of the ground or small bubbling streams, etc. The Fountain Pots are pools of boiling hot water. As amazing as they are, they're really ugly and they create what are called bacterial mats......yuck! Here's some pics and a short video of one of the pots bubbling and boiling.

Then it was on to geyser country and Old Faithful. Another video:

On the way back, several bison decided to cross the road and one of them was standing in the middle of the road stopping traffic. While we were stopped, suddenly Chuck yelled out for me to look and here comes this bison right along side of us! We even saw a baby bison. Again, as cool as it was, it was a little scary being that close to wild animals with no protection, but we made it back safe and sound and VERY excited to call our kids and tell them about our exciting adventure. What a great last day in Yellowstone. Tomorrow it's off to Cody!
